Ung thư đáy lưỡi thường được chẩn đoán ở giai đoạn muộn. Hóa xạ trị nhằm mục đích bảo tồn cơ quan và có kết quả khả quan, tuy nhiên phẫu thuật vẫn là phương pháp điều trị quan trọng trong trường hợp khối u ở giai đoạn tiến xa và là cứu cánh duy nhất ở những bệnh nhân thất bại hoặc tái phát sau hóa xạ trị. Nghiên cứu gồm 26 bệnh nhân ung thư đáy lưỡi giai đoạn tiến triển được phẫu thuật cắt toàn bộ lưỡi – thanh quản: 12 bệnh nhân tái phát sau hóa xạ trị, 2 bệnh nhân ung thư tuyến nước bọt phụ đáy lưỡi, 12 bệnh nhân phẫu thuật thì đầu. 10 bệnh nhân có kèm theo cắt đoạn xương hàm dưới, 3 bệnh nhân cắt marginal. Tất cả đều được tạo hình phần khuyết hổng bằng vạt da cơ ngực lớn. Biến chứng sau mổ xảy ra ở 23,1% bệnh nhân, 7,7 % bệnh nhân xuất hiện lỗ rò. Tỷ lệ phuc hồi đường ăn bằng đường tự nhiên sau mổ là 65%.
