Knowledge of hypertension and practice of hypertension management among adults in Quang Xuong, Thanh Hoa province in 2019

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the knowledge and management practice of shypertension among 396 adults in Quang Tan and Quang Ngoc communes, Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa province. Findings showed the participants had limited knowledge of hypertension. Only 13.1% could present the correct and full definition of hypertension. The proportions of those who knew of symptoms for hypertensioni such as headache, dizziness, chest pain, and facial flushing were low, at 51.0%; 61.6%; 3.5% and 21.7%, respectively; and 16.5% stated that hypertension was unpreventable. In addition, 25% of the participants had diagnosed hypertension and did not take or adhere to treatment. The number of participants who reported to have changed their lifestyle was low, particularly regarding smoking. The study provided evidence for developing appropriate communication and intervetion activities in communities to raise the people’s awareness of hypertension and promote behavior change toward healthy lives.
