Abstract

Our study was performed to compare the effectiveness of treatment of hypotension with intravenous ephedrine and phenylephrine after spinal anesthesia for hip replacement surgery in the elderly. 60 patients (≥ 60 years old) with the hip replacement surgery, were randomized into 2 groups to prevent hypotension immediately after spinal anesthesia and treat hypotension with ephedrine 6mg and phenylephrine 50µg. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean blood pressure (MAP), and heart rate (HR) were recorded at the time between initiation and 30 minutes after injection. Our study results showed that SBP, DBP, and MAP of the two groups were not statistically significant different at all times, heart rate in the ephedrine group was higher than the phenylephrine group at the time T4; 7; 10; 15; 20. This study shows that ephedrine and phenylephrine have similar effects in the treatment of hypotension after spinal anesthesia hip replacement surgery in the elderly.
