Abstract

Gastroenteritis (GE) caused by rotavirus is commonly seen in children. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics and the severity of GE caused by rotavirus. A retrospective case-control study including 309 cases of rotavirus-positive gastroenteritis  (RPG) and 295 control cases of rotavirus-negative gatroenteritis (RNG) were conducted at the Pediatric wards of the Women and Children Hospital of An Giang. There were 309 cases of RPG, median age 11 (2 - 27) months, male accounted for 64.4% . The clinical manifestations of RPG and RNG were fever (34.3% versus 25.1%; P = 0.021), vomit (62.1% vs 52.8%; P = 0.021), diarrhea (8.4 ± 4.0 vs 7.5 ± 3.6 times/day; P < 0.001), convulsions (5.8% vs 2.4%, P = 0.035) and dehydration (46.8% vs 22.7%; P <0.001).  The severity score for RPG (13.1 ± 2.9) was higher than the severity score for RNG (12.6 ± 2.9) (P = 0.041). Conclusions: The clinical manifestations of RPG in children are more severe than the RNG. Children with RPG have a higher Vesikari severity score than RNG.
