Abstract

This is a cross-sectional descriptive study to evaluate the prevalence and factors related to chronic knee pain on 199 patients ≥ 60 years old diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis (OA). The prevalence of chronic knee pain was 84.9%. The rate of chronic knee pain due to neurological causes was 19.5%. There was no association between chronic knee pain and duration of knee OA, position of knee OA, knee range of motion and X-ray lesions according to Kellgren and Lawrence classification (p > 0.05). There were relationships between chronic knee pain and VAS score at rest, when walking and when going up stairs (p < 0.05). There was an association between chronic knee pain and WOMAC score for knee pain (p < 0.05). In summary, chronic knee pain is a common symptom and affects daily function. The level of pain in the elderly with knee OA with chronic knee pain is higher than in the group without chronic knee pain.
