23. Evaluation of acute toxicity, antitussive and expectorant activities of “Ho p/h” liquid extract in the experiment

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate acute toxicity, antitussive and expectorant activities of “Ho P/H” liquid extract. Acute toxicity was carried out in white mice; general symptoms and mortality were assessed within 72 hours and through 7 days after administration. The antitussive effect of “Ho P/H” liquid extract was measured using a murine model of ammonia-induced cough. The expectorant effect of “Ho P/H” liquid extract was evaluated by measuring mice's tracheal phenol red output. As a result, oral LD50 of “Ho P/H” liquid extract was not determined in mice. “Ho P/H” liquid extract at both doses of 14.4 mL/kg and 43.2 mL/kg increased the latent period of cough, inhibited the cough frequency, and increased the inhibition of cough; moreover, both doses enhanced mice's tracheal phenol red output as compared with the control group. In conclusion, “Ho P/H” liquid extract derived from herbal medicine was a safe product, and posed remarkable antitussive, expectorant effects in this mice experimentation.
