Abstract

Our study aimed to determine the normal measurements of the spleen by ultrasound in adult and its correlation with CT volume by performing simultaneously splenic ultrasound and CT with software on 100 healthy adults. The results show that, the mean splenic maximum length, craniocaudal length, maximum width and thickness were 8,6cm (± 1,6 SD); 3,3cm (± 0,8 SD); 8,7cm (± 1,6 SD); 3,5cm (± 0,8 SD), respectively. Among these splenic diameters, the maximum length correlated most strongly with splenic volume on (r = 0.83). Using 2 standard deviations above the mean as a guide, 11.8 cm as the upper limit of normal for maximum spleen length in this population. V = Spleen index x 0.36 + 22.40 is the best formula for calculating spleen volume based on ultrasound measurements.
