21. Some factors related to chronic pain in the elderly with type 2 diabetes
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate some factors associated with chronic pain in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A cross-sectional descriptive study on 275 patients ≥60 years old diagnosed with diabetes, examined and treated as outpatients at the National Geriatric Hospital. Patients were interviewed according to a unified set of questions to assess chronic pain, general information, diabetes features, complications of diabetes, and depression. The prevalence of chronic pain was statistically significantly higher in females, retired people, patients who had a duration of diabetes ≥5 years, at least 1 chronic complication of diabetes, peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes, or depression. The patients with chronic pain group had significantly higher body mass index (BMI) and average waist/hip ratio than those without chronic pain. The multivariate logistic regression model showed females (OR=2.36); peripheral nerve complications (OR=14.59); depression (OR=6.3) were associated with an increased prevalence of chronic pain in elderly diabetic patients. In summary, the study showed that chronic pain was associated with female gender, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and depression.
