Abstract

Oral disease is one of the most common diseases globally, causing serious health and economic burdens and reducing the quality of life. According to the literature, patients with nephrotic syndrome have destroyed hard tissue and surrounding parts of the teeth due to long-term drug treatment. In addition, regular hospitalization and specific diet also affect the care and prevention of oral diseases. The purpose of this study is to describe the oral and dental diseases of children with primary nephrotic syndrome at the National Hospital of Pediatrics. This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed in 407 children diagnosed for primary nephrotic disease. The results are as follows: 75,6% of children are boys, the oral hygiene index is average, 63,9% children with gingivitis, 12,3% children with hypertrophic gingivitis, 78,6% children with caries, the index of dental caries in primary dentition (dmft/dmfs) is 5.6 ± 4.4/9.9 ± 10.7; permanent dentition (DMFT/DMFS) is 1.4 ± 1.9/1.8 ± 2.8; 11,1% children have developmental defects of enamel with demarcated opacities as  the most common defect.
