Main Article Content
Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the quality of life of patients undergoing laparoscopic total colectomy by Duhamel technique at the National Children's Hospital from 2013 to 2018. The study included 52 patients with total colonic aganglionosis. Information about the patient's bowel function and quality of life was collected at the follow-up visit. Results show that the majority of children experienced occasional fecal incontinence (68.2%); 95.5% of children intermittently experienced involuntary diarrhea; 27.3% sometimes missed school; 1 child (4.5%) infrequently experienced anxiety. The majority (77.3%) children had poor appetite. Overall, there were 46 patients (88.5%) with good bowel function, 5 patients (9.6%) with moderate bowel function and 1 patient (1.9%) with poor bowel function. The majority of children (95.5%) had good quality of life, only 1 child (4.6%) was at a poor level. The study showed that laparoscopic surgery for children with total colonic aganglionosis resulted in good bowel function and quality of life, demonstrating the effectiveness of Duhamel's technique in the treatment of total colonic aganglionosis.
