Abstract

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland is extremely rare with an incidence of less than 1% of all thyroid malignancies. The pathogenesis and etiology are still unclear currently. The prognosis of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland remains very poor due to frequent local recurrence, distant and lymph node metastasis. The treatment and prognosis of the disease is dependent on a correct diagnosis. However, it can be challenging to identify thyroid cancers from head - neck squamous cell carcinoma that have invaded or metastasized to the thyroid gland. Here, we report the case of a 57-year-old female who was diagnosed with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland in both thyroid lobes. The goal of this study is to provide further clinical and pathologic information regarding this rare histological subtype of the thyroid gland.
