24. Direct medical cost of late-stage lung cancer treatment in Vietnam based on big data analysis of national social health insurance database 2020

Abstract

The descriptive retrospective study aims to assess the direct medical cost associated with the treatment of late-stage lung cancer treatment in 2020 using the Vietnam Social Security database. Treatment cost data in 2020 was adjusted to 2023 using by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). In total, there are 6,749 late-stage lung cancer patients, with approximately 42% classified in stage III and 58% in stage IV.On average, the annual direct medical cost per patient with late-stage lung cancer was 101.4 million VND. The total economic burden of late-stage lung cancer in 2020 amounted to 684,617,537,515 VND, with medication costs accounting for a significant proportion of the treatment expense. The results of the study provide important insight about the economic burden of late-stage lung cancer in Vietnam. Early intervention is needed to prevent progression of the disesae to its late stages, thereby mitigating the economic burden of lung cancer in the country.
