Abstract

This study was to assess the nutritional status and associated factors to malnutrition among cancer patients under 5 years old, who were treated at the Viet Nam National Children's Hospital. This was a cross-sectional, prospective descriptive study of 150 cancer patients from July 2022 to March 2023 at the Oncology Centerof the Vietnam National Children's Hospital. The malnutrition rate ranged from 11.4 to 28% and there was no difference between the solid tumor and acute leukemia groups. The prevanlence of underweight, stunted, and wasted malnutrition rates were 28%, 17.3%, and 24%, respectively. Factors asociated to underweight and wasting malnutrition were disease stage, acute diarrhea 2 weeks before admission, and side effect of chemotherapy. The type of cancer and respiratory disease present before treatment had a minor effect on the malnutrition status.
