Abstract

Concerns leading up to surgery can impact treatment decisions and overall treatment outcomes in surgical patients. This study aims to assess the proportion of patients experiencing anxiety before undergoing thoracic surgery, and to identify certain factors associated with pre-surgical anxiety at Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital. Employing a cross-sectional descriptive study design, 271 thoracic surgery patients at Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City were enrolled between June 2023 and August 2023. About 64.94% of patients experienced anxiety prior to surgery, with 10.7% experiencing moderate to severe anxiety. Female patients, younger age groups, those who are singles, and those with higher educational levels were at higher risk of increased pre-surgical anxiety levels. Pre-surgical anxiety in thoracic surgery patients is prevalent, highlighting the need for interventions to alleviate anxiety in patients before thoracic surgery.
