Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to assess the awareness and training demands of healthcare workers in responses to climate change. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted at 12 public medical facilities in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province from 2021 to 2022 using semi-structured key informant guides. The transcripts were summarized and analyzed to identify similar and opposite opinions about awareness and training needs related to climate change and responses to climate change. Healthcare workers in Ba Ria - Vung Tau were aware of climate change which was frequently observed through heatwaves, unusual weather changes, rain storms and floods. The majority of healthcare workers realized that the training on climate change is “really necessary", however, some of them did not clearly understand the importance of this issue. The healthcare workers at commune, ward, town medical facilities and the rescue staff need to be given priority in training. The training contents should cover the impacts of climate change on health and the environment due to climate change, how to respond, and first-aid practices. Training should also include periodic training sessions, launching a movement, and organizing communication initiatives focused on climate change.
