Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract that negatively impacts the patients quality of life. This cross-sectional descriptive study on 39 children aged 5 - 17 at the National Children's Hospital from 15/10/2022 to 1/8/2023 was conducted to evaluate variables associated with the quality of life (QoL) of the subjects. The Vietnamese version of the PedsQLTM 4.0 questionnaire was used to evaluate the patient’s QoL. The association between sociodemographic, pathological, therapeutic aspects and QoL was analyzed respectively by univariate linear regression model. According to the study, children with inflammatory bowel disease living in poor or near-poor conditions with moderate to high disease activity, anemic and underweight, required three or more medications or in need for surgery had lower overall quality of life. Furthermore, children who manifested the disease very early or had a prolonged course of over 5 years had worsed QoL in the school functioning domain, and girls had lower QoL in the emotional functioning domain compared to boys. As such, children with the aforementioned issues require additional attention and care from clinicians and caregivers to assist in enhancing the children’s QoL.
