Abstract

Sigmoid colon volvulus is a rare disease, as such the diagnosis and treatment are still difficult. We report a case of sigmoid colon volvulus and review the world medical literature. A 15-year-old male patient, was admitted to the hospital with acute intestinal obstruction suspected due to food residue thus received emergency surgery. It is notable that the patient has a history of 3 months constipation 3 years ago and was in stable conditon after treatment. During surgery, it was discovered that the intestinal obstruction was a non-necrotic sigmoid colon volvulus. We performed a sigmoid colon resection immediately. The patient returned to normal oral feeding 6 days post surgery and was discharged after 8 days of treatment. At the 1 month follow up , the patient was in good health and had normal bowel movements. Sigmoid volvulus should be considered in cases of acute or recurrent intestinal obstruction and sigmoid colon resection surgery is a radical treatment method.
