25. Dental patients’ awareness about the effects of smoking on oral health and their attitudes towards the involvement of dentists in smoking cessation counselling

Abstract
The study was conducted on 60 patients visited Dong Da General Hospital to assess the awareness regarding the effects of smoking on oral health and their attitudes towards the involvement of dentists in smoking cessation counselling. The results show that patients have a good knowledge of the effects of smoking on oral health (80%). The percentage of patients’ awareness that smoking affects teeth staining, halitosis, oral cancer, caries and periodontal diseases is high. However, patients are significantly less aware of the relationship between smoking and bad taste (31.7%) and on impaired healing (28.3%) and on implant failure (16.7%). Overall, patients hold very positive attitudes towards dentists’ role in smoking cessation.
