Abstract

Undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses significant health challenges and adversely affects the quality of life in the elderly population. Despite this, limited research has focused on this demographic, particularly individuals aged over 60 years. This study aims to ascertain the prevalence of undiagnosed T2DM within a community setting. We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study in Vinh Loc A commune, Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City, with a systematically randomized sample of 816 participants aged over 60 years. The findings revealed that the prevalence of undiagnosed T2DM was 13.6%. Statistical analysis indicated no significant associations between undiagnosed T2DM and variables such as age, excessive alcohol consumption, concurrent hypertension, preference for sweet foods, or high vegetable intake. The high prevalence of undiagnosed T2DM in individuals over 60 underscores the necessity for regular diabetes screening programs targeted at the elderly, particularly among those with overweight or obesity.
