Abstract

The study aimed to determine the grade of intra-pancreatic fat deposition (IPFD) on computed tomography (CT) in normal people and evaluate the correlation with body mass index (BMI) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These indicators are intended to determine the grade of pancreatic fat deposition through observation (divided into 4 grade 0, 1, 2 and 3) and measuring HU determined on CT. A total of 208 people aged 47.6 ± 14.8 years old had abdominal CT scans and were determined not to be related to pancreatic inflammation or tumor. The results showed that grade 0,1 and 2 of the pancreatic head and tail accounted for 86.5%, 12% and 1.4% respectively; and 86.1%, 13%, and 1.0% respectively. There were no cases of grade 3 fat deposition. Age in people with grade 1 fat deposition was higher than that of grade 0 (p < 0.05). The average value of BMI gradually increases with the grade of IPFD from grade 0 to grade 2 (p < 0.05); Pancreatic density in underweight and obese people is lower than normal BMI (p < 0.05). There is agreement between the pancreatic grades in terms of observation and measurement of pancreatic density. Patients with T2DM had lower mean pancreatic density and higher grade of IPFD than those without this disease, 47.8 ± 4.7HU and 44.9 ± 7.6HU, respectively (p < 0.003).
