Abstract

Ménière’s disease is characterized by recurrent episode of vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus. Currently, there are many different methods of treating Ménière’s disease, of which using diuretics is considered effective. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using diuretics to treat Ménière’s disease. A search of the electronic databases Pubmed, Web of Science, Cochrane library and Google Scholar was performed; . Of the 1073 studies identified, 14 eligible publications were included in the full-text analysis. We found 14 articles matching the selection criteria related to 736 patients with 3 main drug groups: Thiazides, Carbonic anhydrase (C.A) inhibitor diuretics, Osmotic diuretics and 2 groups of drugs are combined. We have conducted an analysis of the characteristics and therapeutic effectiveness of the above drugs. Although controversial, the review indicates that diuretic therapy in the treatment of Ménière's disease is an effective treatment for controlling vertigo and tinnitus, but hearing improvement still remains limited. The study also shows that oral diuretics are safe and convenient for long-term treatment of Ménière's disease.
