31. Clinical and paraclinical characteristics of medullary thyroid cancer patients at Viet Nam National Cancer Hospital during 2018 - 2023
Main Article Content
Abstract
Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer of the endocrine system. Histopathology includes four main types: papillary cancer, follicular cancer, medullary cancer, and undifferentiated cancer, with papillary cancer being the most common. Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) accounts for only 3 - 5% of all TC cases. This type of cancer has distinct clinical features, such as a tendency to occur in males, genetic associations, and related to Calcitonin. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study on 23 patients with MTC at Viet Nam National Cancer Hospital from January 2018 to December 2023, aiming to describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of this patient group. The study recorded an average age of 53.8 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.6/1. The tumor was primarily found in one lobe of the thyroid gland, accounting for 78.3%. Cervical lymph node metastasis was observed in 78.3% of patients, with 83.3% of these having lateral cervical lymph node metastasis. The rate of positive FNA for MTC was 65.2%.
