Dietary intake of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the National Lung Hospital in 2020-2021

Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is becoming one of the major public health problems worldwide due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. Patients with COPD can experience unwanted weight loss, reduced dietary intake to severe malnutrition, exhaustion, and impact on patient outcomes and quality of life. A balanced diet benefits all COPD patients. This study is conducted to evaluate the dietary intake of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the Department of Computational Lung Diseases of the National Lung Hospital from December 2020 to May 2021. Over 106 patients were collected by non-randomized sampling. The results showed that the average dietary energy of the study subjects was 1336.3 ± 477.5 Kcal, equivalent to 29.2 kcal/kg/day. The average amount of glucide, protein, lipid was 190.7 ± 66.7g, 56.8 ± 22.5g, 38.2 ± 28.9g, respectively, reaching 100%, 71.9% and 72.1%, respectively with average Recommended dietary allowance. Most of the patients whose diets did not meet the Recommended dietary allowance in terms of micronutrient content. Most patients have the habit of eating more than 3 meals a day (83.96%). 44.34% of the patients had a smaller diet than usual, only 14.15% of patients are on a diet.
