Recrudecent meningitis due to Salmonella in children: A case report
Main Article Content
Abstract
Meningitis caused by Salmonella in children accounts for less than 1% of meningitis cases in developing countries. Recrudescent meningitis due to Salmonella is very rare. We report a case of a 1-month-old male child with a confirmed diagnosis of meningitis caused by Salmonella enterica and received 28 days with ampicillin combined ceftriaxone antibiotics. The child was discharged from the hospital in stable condition. After 10 days, the child was re-admitted in a state of septic shock, blood cultures and cerebrospinal fluid cultures were positive for Salmonella enterica. The child was diagnosed with septic shock - recrudescent meningitis caused by Salmonella and had very severe neurological sequelae. Conclusion: In children, Salmonella meningitis is rare but has a higher rate of recrudecent and complications than neurological infections caused by other gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, specific treatment needs to include antibiotics based on the results of the antibiogram, antibiotics combination, treatment duration of at least 4 weeks and screening for risk of recurrence meningitis.
