Lifestyle factors affecting gastric ulcer symptoms among medical students at Hanoi Medical University in 2023

Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 388 undergraduate students at Hanoi Medical University from September 2023 to December 2023, to describe the current situation and analyze lifestyle factors affecting the symptoms of peptic ulcer disease. The results indicate that 30.9% of students had undergone a stomach examination in the past 3 months, with 68.3% of those students diagnosed with gastric ulcer. . The rate of staying up late among medical students was very high (88.4%), the pressure of schoolwork (73.1%), and life pressure also have a relatively high rate (55.7%). Many students had irregular eating habits (62.9%), more than half of the students exercised regularly (51.5%), and very few students smoked (2.6%). The most common symptoms experienced by students in the past 3 months were fatigue (37.9%), abdominal pain or discomfort at night or when hungry (34.8%), bloating (31.4%), belching or acid reflux (30.4%), acid reflux (27.3%), and pain in the epigastric region (20.1%). The study showed a correlation between lifestyle factors and gastric ulcer symptoms, such as irregular eating habits, life pressure, and the habit of consuming late meal at night, with statistically significant differences observed (p < 0.05).
