Abstract

Stroke is the leading cause of death in the world and causes many serious sequelae for patients, especially dysphagia. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 108 stroke patients undergoing inpatient treatment at Hanoi Medical University Hospital to determine the prevalence of dysphagia and some related factors. Research results show that the proportion of patients with swallowing disorders screened according to the EAT-10 questionnaire was 29.9%, nearly 2 times higher than the rate when clinically screened according to RSST & WST which was 15.7%. Elderly patients, patients with a history of diabetes and stroke, patients with cognitive disorders and large areas of brain damage had a higher risk of dysphagia than other groups, the results were statistically significant with p 0.05. Therefore, early screening for swallowing disorders for stroke patients plays a very important role in order to have an appropriate nutrition intervention plan to contribute to increasing treatment effectiveness and quality of life for stroke patients with dysphagia.
