Abstract

A prospective study was conducted to (1) describe the prevalence of phlebitis at the site of peripheral venous catheter (PVC) and (2) analyze some associated factors in inpatients at Ha Noi Medical University Hospital. 900 patients with 1519 PVC were monitored and evaluated by the Visual Infusion Phlebitis score (VIP). As a result, 462 PVC developped infusion phlebitis (30.4%); the most common was grade 1 (21.3%) and grade 2 (8.5%); a few had grade 3 (0.6%); no one had grade 4 or 5. The rate of phlebitis was determined to be 134/1000 days of treatment. Several factors are associated with an increased incidence of phlebitis including: old age (≥ 60), chronic medical conditions, obesity or malnourrished, alcohol consumption, PVC was performed at the emergency department, inserted in the arm, paralyzed side of the body, large needle size (18G) and addition of a connecting device. The relative risk of developing phlebitis when PVC were placed in the arm was 1.7 times higher than at the elbow.
