Abstract

A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 309 pediatric patients admitted to the Department of Emergency and Poison Control at Vietnam National Children's Hospital from January 2020 to December 2021 to describe the clinical characteristics by specific causes of acute non-traumatic headaches in children aged 7 to 15 years old. Acute headache was more commonly observed in boys, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.5/1. The average age was 9.6 ± 2.1 years old. The most common cause was infectious diseases, with meningitis being the most prevalent (33.3 %), followed by pharyngitis (21.4%) and viral fever (12.3 %). Other less frequent causes were migraine (7.4%), encephalitis (2.3%), brain tumor (1.9%), hypertension (1.3%), and cerebral hemorrhage (1%). The majority of headache in children in the Department of Emergency and Poison Control was benign secondary headaches related to upper respiratory tract infections, viral fever,and sinusitis. Warning signs of severe conditions included seizures, increased intracranial pressure, and hemiplegia.
