Abstract
This is a cross-sectional descriptive study on 216 patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing periodic hemodialysis at Military Hospital 175 - Ho Chi Minh City, from September 2023 to June 2024. We conducted a study with the objective to survey the rate and clinical characteristics of sleep disorders in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. 54.6% of patients were males. The average age was 56.7 ± 14.5 years old. The rate of insomnia was 48.1%, hypersomnia was 5.1%, restless legs syndrome was 4.6%, nightmares were 3.2%; sleep apnea, sleep talking, teeth grinding were 2.3% and other disorders were less than 2%. The average daily sleep time was 6.07 ± 2.00 hours, the number of days per week with sleep disturbances was 2.8 days on average, the median duration of sleep disturbances was 23.7 weeks. The study shows that sleep disorders are a common symptom of chronic kidney disease on dialysis, with insomnia accounting for the highest rate. Sleep disorders in this group of patients are characterized by poor sleep quality, moderate to severe insomnia, short sleep duration, frequent nighttime awakenings, early morning awakenings, and longer sleep duration.
