Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study on 119 children aged 15 - 16 years old at Hermann Gmeiner High School, Hanoi, was conducted to determine the relationship between the rate of malocclusion according to Angle’s classification and oral hygiene status. Results: The rates of very good and good oral hygiene decreased from normal occlusion, Class I, Class II to Class III Angle’s classification, whereas the rates of average and poor oral hygiene increased from normal occlusion, Class I, Class II to Class III Angle’s classification. The correlations of open bite and anterior crossbite, increased overjet, deep bite, and midline deviation were not related to oral hygiene status with p > 0.05. Conclusion: Malocclusion according to Angle’s classification is mildly related to oral hygiene status, with posterior crossbite causing a 2.7 times higher rate of poor oral hygiene compared to the absence of posterior crossbite. However, other occlusal factors were not found to be associated with oral hygiene status in children aged 15 - 16.
