Abstract

The study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of patients undergoing early tracheostomy and to evaluate the treatment outcomes of early tracheostomy patients at the Intensive Care Department, Hanoi Medical University Hospital in 2023. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 30 patients who had early tracheostomy (≤ 7 days) and 28 late tracheostomy patients (> 7 days) in ICU. The late tracheostomy group had an average hospital cost higher than the early tracheostomy group (62.6 ± 52.5 vs 174.3 ± 199.3; p < 0.001). The early tracheostomy group was associated with shorter ICU stay (10.3 ± 8.3 vs 20.7 ± 11.4; p < 0.001) and mechanical ventilation duration (5.7 ± 3.7 vs 16.5 ± 14.6; p < 0.001). The results indicate that early tracheostomy in ICU patients helps reduce hospitalization costs, shorter ICU stays, and shorter duration on ventilator (p < 0.05).
