Abstract

Anxiety is a common condition in patients before receiving medical procedures including intra-articular injection and aspiration. This cross-sectional study described the anxiety rate and associated factors in patients who have joint injection or aspiration at Hanoi Medical University Hospital using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory - State (STAI-S) questionnaire. There were 245 patients participating in the study; the percentage of patients with clinically significant (STAI-S ≥ 40) was relatively high, accounting for 51.0%. There was a statistically significant correlation between patient’s anxiety and the number of injection sites, type of injection medicine (corticosteroid), and patient's lack of prior injection intervention experience. Therefore, it is imperative to have a strategy for advising and explaining to the patient's family before performing the procedure to achieve the patient's cooperation and to enhance treatment outcomes.
