Abstract

Periodontitis and type 2 diabetes often occur together and have a bidirectional relationship. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of periodontitis and its association with oral hygiene among patients with type 2 diabetes at Binh Chanh District Hospital. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 132 type 2 diabetes patients from February to April 2024. Periodontitis was diagnosed according to CDC/AAP standards. The results showed that 71.2% of patients had moderate periodontitis, and no case of severe periodontitis recorded. Oral hygiene was the most significant factor related to periodontitis, with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.49 (95% CI: 0.32 - 0.75) and p = 0.001. Periodontitis is a common health issue among patients with type 2 diabetes and requires prevention and treatment. Interventions aimed at improving oral hygiene, such as counseling, health education, and practical guidance, may help prevent periodontitis in patients with type 2 diabetes.
