Abstract

The study analyzed   direct medical cost  for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease treatment (COPD) at moderate to very severe levels according to the GOLD 2023 (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) classification. This study is a cross-sectional, retrospective analysis of all medical visits for COPD patients in 2020, based on data from Vietnam’s Health Insurance database, to determine direct healthcare costs for patients classified by GOLD. The analysis identified a total of 328,634 COPD patients in 2020, with 78.12% of them at moderate to very severe levels (GOLD 2-4). Specifically, GOLD levels 2, 3, and 4 accounted for 59.0%, 37.4%, and 3.6%, respectively. The average annual cost per person for GOLD 2, 3, and 4 categories, covered by health insurance and discounted to 2023 values using the CPI, was 2.2, 6.3, and 6.6 million VND, respectively. In conclusion, most COPD patients were at moderate to very severe levels according to GOLD, with treatment costs increasing by severity. Effective management of COPD in the early stages to prevent progression to later stages is essential in reducing the disease burden of COPD in Vietnam.
