34. Factors influencing medication adherence in outpatients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify factors associated with medication non-adherence in outpatients with type 2 diabetes. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among type 2 diabetes outpatients at the Endocrinology Clinic of Thong Nhat Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, from December 2022 to June 2023. Treatment adherence was assessed using the MARS-5 scale (Medication Adherence Report Scale). A total of 387 patients participated, with a mean age of 68.6 years old, and 60.2% were male. The non-adherence rate was 41.1%. Univariate analysis revealed that individuals at less than or equal to 60 years old, lengthier disease duration, metformin and insulin therapy were associated with higher rates of non-adherence. Multivariate regression indicated significant associations between age less than or equal to 60 (OR = 0.95; 95% CI: 0.93 – 0.98), extended disease duration (OR = 1.05; 95% CI: 1.02 – 1.08), and insulin therapy (OR = 3.36; 95% CI: 1.94 – 5.84) with non-adherence. HbA1C levels were notably lower in the adherence group (7.3%) compared to the non-adherence group (10.6%), p < 0.001. Additionally, hypoglycemic episodes were more frequent in adherent patients (p = 0.044). Individuals ypunger or equal to 60 years old , insulin therapy, and lengthier duration of disease were significant predictors of non-adherence in patients with type 2 diabetes.
