LGBT cultural competency and compassion competence among nursing students
Main Article Content
Abstract
LGBT Cultural competency (LGBT-CC) and compassion competence are two essential competencies for nurses working in a multicultural environment. The study aims to explore LGBT-CC and compassion competence among nursing students and related factors. A cross-sectional descriptive research design was applied to 263 third- and fourth-year nursing students at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University, in 2024. The average scores for LGBT-CC and compassion competence among nursing students were 4.48 ± 0.53 and 3.59 ± 0.41, respectively, both of which were at the average level. There was a positive correlation between LGBT-CC and compassion competence (p < 0.001). Predictive factors for LGBT-CC include: compassion competence, frequency of accessing social media related to the LGBTQ+ community contents, frequency of contact with LGBTQ+ individuals, and clinical practice competence with p < 0.001. Therefore, intervention programs to enhance these essential competencies for nursing students are necessary.
