Evaluation of depression among 6th-grade students at a secondary school in Hanoi

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of depression risk and related factors among 6th-grade students in Hanoi using the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ). A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 537 students at a secondary school. Data were collected using the SMFQ and analyzed with Stata 16.0 software, employing descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of depression risk (SMFQ ≥ 12) was 5.2%. Depression risk was higher among female students (OR = 0.33, p = 0.02) and those living with siblings (OR = 19.14, p < 0.001). Students from families with higher socioeconomic status had significantly lower depression risk compared to those from lower-income families (OR = 0.05, p < 0.01). The study highlights the importance of addressing mental health among students, particularly those in high-risk groups. Early screening and intervention are crucial to mitigate the negative impacts of depression in school-aged children.
