24. Evaluation of distant metastatic patterns and associated clinicopathological parameters in pediatric well- differentiated thyroid carcinoma

Abstract

Thyroid cancer is rare in children and mainly seen in well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Cancer in children has a higher rate of distant metastasis to lungs and bones thanother age groups. Among the study cohort (n = 99), eight patients (8.1%) presented with distant metastatic disease, with pulmonary metastases representing the exclusive site of distant spread. All cases of pulmonary involvement were definitively confirmed through preoperative computed tomography imaging and validated by postoperative whole-body scintigraphy. Statistical analysis of metastasis-associated parameters revealed significantly elevated rates of distant dissemination in correlation with several clinicopathological variables: age < 15 years, male, bilateral thyroid involvement, extrathyroidal extension, multifocal disease, and lateral cervical lymph node metastases.
