Abstract

Skin cancer is characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal skin cells. It is often overlooked, particularly in individuals with darker skin. To facilitate prevention and early detection of skin cancer, frequent and careful self-examinations are essential to identify suspicious skin changes. At present, Vietnam lacks a reliable instrument to assess attitudes toward skin self-examination. This study aimed to translate and evaluate the reliability of the Skin Self-Examination Attitude Scale (SSEAS) in its Vietnamese version. We conducted a study involving 47 students at Hanoi Medical University in December 2024. Data were collected at two time points to assess internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha and test-retest reliability using Intra-Class Correlation (ICC). The Vietnamese version of the SSEAS showed high internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.782. The test-retest reliability between the two administrations was also high, with an ICC of 0.814 and Pearson correlation of 0.696. The findings indicate that the Vietnamese version of the SSEAS is a highly reliable and suitable instrument for measuring attitudes toward skin self-examination among the Vietnamese population.
