Nutritional status and actual dietary intake of children aged 6 to 9 years with peptic ulcer disease at the National Children’s Hospital

Abstract

This study aims to assess the nutritional status and actual dietary intake of children aged 6 – 9 years old with peptic ulcer to provide a scientific basis for appropriate nutritional intervention. This cross-sectional, prospective study was conducted on 75 children diagnosed with peptic ulcer at the National Children's Hospital from January 2023 to December 2023. Nutritional status was assessed using anthropometric indices (BMI-for-age, weight-for-age, and height-for-age), and dietary intake was surveyed through retrospective interviews. Among the 75 participants, males represented the majority (76%). Based on BMI-for-age, 5.3% of children were classified as wasted, while 24% were overweight or obese. According to weight-for-age, 2.7% were underweight, and 22.7% were overweight or obese. The prevalence of stunting was 4%. Dietary energy intake, along with macronutrients (protein, lipid, and carbohydrate), met the recommended requirements for age and sex. However, the consumption of inappropriate foods, such as fried foods, sweets, and spicy foods, remained above average. Children with peptic ulcer should undergo nutritional assessment and counseling to optimize their dietary intake, facilitate disease management, and support recovery.
