Improving optimal ARV treatment adherence and related factors in homosexual men
Main Article Content
Abstract
This randomized controlled intervention study of 212 homosexual men on ART in Hanoi from April 2022 to May 2023, was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Zalo-based interventions in improving the rate of optimal treatment adherence and to identify several associated factors. Before the intervention, the optimal adherence rate of both groups was 48.6%, and there was no difference between the two groups. After 3 and 6 months, the optimal ARV adherence rate in the control group remained virtually unchanged, while the intervention group showed marked improvement, increasing from 42.1% to 53.4% at 3 months and reaching 66.9% after 6 months. According to a mixed-effects model, the intervention group reduced the risk of suboptimal adherence by factors of 0.31 and 0.19 compared to the control group (p = 0.012 and < 0.001, respectively). Additionally, individuals with a low quality of life had a 0.81 times higher risk of suboptimal adherence compared to those with a high quality of life (p = 0.001). These findings indicate that Zalo-based interventions are effective and underscore the importance of improving quality of life in ARV treatment.
