Experimental evaluation of the acute and subchronic toxicity of Thong Phong hoan Ba Giang
Main Article Content
Abstract
Thong Phong hoan Ba Giang is a herbal combination with the intended purpose of preventing and treating acute and chronic gout. This study aimed to evaluate the acute and subchronic toxicity of Thong Phong hoan Ba Giang in experimental animals. The acute toxicity was evaluated in Swiss mice by administering the increasing doses to determine the lowest dose that would induce 100% mouse mortality and the highest dose corresponding to 0% mouse mortality. The subchronic toxicity was evaluated in Wistar rats at 4.32 tablets (equivalent to the clinical dose) and 12.96 tablets/kg b.w/day (three times higher than the clinical dose) for 90 consecutive days. Our results showed that Thong Phong hoan Ba Giang at the dose up to 150 tablets/kg b.w did not cause mortality or any abnormal signs in Swiss mice; at the doses of 4.32 tablets and 12.96 tablets/kg b.w did not significantly affect the general condition, body weight, hematological and biochemical indices and microscopic morphology of liver and kidney of Wistar rats. In conclusion, Thong Phong hoan Ba Giang did not cause acute and subchronic toxicity when administered orally to animals at the tested doses.
