16. Research on the indications for elective cesarean section at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and gynecology: Causes and affecting factors
Main Article Content
Abstract
An elective cesarean section is a planned surgical delivery of the fetus before the onset of labor, performed either for clear medical indications or upon maternal request. This study, conducted at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology from August 1, 2023, to August 1, 2024, aimed to analyze the indications and factors influencing the decision to perform an elective cesarean section. The results showed that the primary indication originated from fetal and fetal appendage factors (42.5%), followed by maternal factors (40.37%) and social factors (17.13%). Demographic characteristics were found to be associated with the decision for cesarean section; urban women employed in administrative or office-related professions, had higher cesarean rates. The study recommends expanding the research scope to further analyze strategies for reducing the cesarean section rate, as well as conducting in-depth investigations into the social and medical factors influencing elective cesarean decisions. Additionally, it highlights the need to develop a monitoring and early intervention system targeting these factors to minimize unnecessary cesarean sections and improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
