The impact of depression on academic motivation among students: A study at a secondary school in Hanoi
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the impact of depression - identified using the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ) with a cutoff score of ≥ 12 - on the academic motivation of Grade 6 students at a public secondary school in central Hanoi. A cross-sectional descriptive design was conducted with a full-sample approach involving 537 sixth-grade students. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires, including the SMFQ to assess depression and the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) to measure academic motivation. Based on intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation subscales, a Self-Determination Index (SDI) was calculated to reflect students’ autonomy in learning motivation. Results showed that students at risk of depression had significantly lower academic motivation than their counterparts, particularly in the SDI score (3.29 ± 4.92 vs. 9.16 ± 3.00; p = 0.000). Tobit regression analysis revealed a significant negative association between SMFQ scores and SDI (β = -0.42; p < 0.001), even after adjusting for demographic factors and academic performance. These findings confirm that Grade 6 students with a higher risk of depression tend to exhibit lower academic motivation, especially in terms of intrinsic motivation and self-determination.
