18. Outcomes of reconstructive surgery using autologous skin grafts for soft tissue defects of the dorsal foot
Main Article Content
Abstract
We evaluated the surgical outcome of 35 patients with soft tissue defects of the dorsal foot who underwent autologous skin grafting at Bach Mai Hospital. The surgeries were performed between January 2023 and March 2025. 25 cases received full-thickness skin grafts and 10 cases received split-thickness grafts, with the most common causes of injury being snake bites and infections. The average defect area was larger in the split-thickness group. After an average wound bed preparation period of 9.3 days, 97.1% of patients achieved favorable short-term outcomes without the need for additional grafting. In the long-term, 34 patients regained good motor function, 54.3% of patients achieved sensory recovery at levels S3–S4, and no case of anesthesia was recorded. Normal wound healing at the graft site occurred in 77.1% of cases, with higher aesthetic satisfaction in the full-thickness group (80%) compared to the split-thickness group (50%). We suggest autologous skin grafting yielded favorable clinical results in terms of functional and aesthetic recovery, with high recovery rates and low complication rates, particularly in cases using full-thickness grafts.
