Abstract

Malnutrition is a common issue that significantly affects cancer patients, including those with gastric cancer. This study aimed to describe the nutritional status of patients before gastric cancer surgery at K Tan Trieu Hospital in 2024. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 131 patients diagnosed with gastric cancer and indicated for surgery. The results showed that the prevalence of preoperative malnutrition according to the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) was 62.6%, of which 25.2% were classified as severe. Based on Body Mass Index (BMI), 29.8% of patients were underweight. According to mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), 13% of patients were identified as malnourished. Serum albumin was reduced in 11.4% of patients, mainly at mild to moderate levels. The preoperative anemia rate was 26.7%. There was a statistically significant association between BMI and both PG-SGA and MUAC (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that malnutrition and anemia remain common in patients undergoing gastric cancer surgery. Comprehensive nutritional assessment and early intervention are essential to improve treatment outcomes and reduce postoperative complications.
