Acute pancreatitis in children with primary hypertriglyceridemia: Phenotype and genotype
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study describes the clinical, biochemical, and treatment characteristics of acute pancreatitis in patients with primary hypertriglyceridemia. This retrospective study included 7 patients diagnosed with hypertriglyceridemia complicated by acute pancreatitis at the National Hospital of Pediatrics from 2016 to 2024. The median age of onset of pancreatitis complications was 8.3 years old (range 6 months - 13 years old). Symptoms during the acute pancreatitis episode included vomiting and abdominal distension in children under 1 year old, and abdominal pain in older children. Triglyceride levels at the time of complication ranged from 8.3 to 19.5 mmol/L. All patients were treated with dietary lipid restriction during the acute phase, and two patients over 10 years old received additional lipid-lowering medication. No patientrequired insulin, plasmapheresis, or heparin. In conclusion, good control of blood triglyceride levels will helps to prevent pancreatitis complications.
