Abstract

Lao Nha Que coconut oil is a natural product with the intended use of treating gastric ulcers. The aim of this study was to evaluate its effect on an indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer model in Wistar rats. The rats were divided into five groups: group 1 (normal control), group 2 (model), group 3 received misoprostol at 50 μg/kg/day, group 4 and 5 received Lao Nha Que coconut oil at 5mL/kg/day and 10mL/kg/day, respectively, for 7 days. Gastric ulcers were induced in groups 2 to 5 by oral administration of indomethacin at a single dose of 40 mg/kg b.w/day. After 6 hours, rats were anesthetized and the gastric tissues were examined both macroscopically and microscopically. Our results showed that Lao Nha Que coconut oil reduced the ulcer index, number of lesions, and microscopic ulcer score, while also improving the histological lesions. In conclusion, Lao Nha Que coconut oil exhibited protective effects against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in this experimental model.
