Abstract

Since the first COVID-19 case was recorded in January 2020, Vietnam was one of the nations enduring the most severe impact of the fourth wave caused by the Delta variant, especially in Ho Chi Minh City. Understanding the risk factors for severe outcomes would identify vulnerable populations and facilitate medical decision-making. Our retrospective study observed 504 eligible COVID-19 patients admitted to an Intensive Care Center (ICU) in Ho Chi Minh City, urgently built by Bach Mai Hospital in August 2021. The study results showed that patients over 60 years old had a 3.1-fold higher risk of death than those under 60 years old. A history of diabetes was identified as a significant contributor to increased risk of death (OR = 1.646, 95% CI: 1.036 - 2.617, p = 0.035) as well as each unit increase in BMI increased the risk of death by 6.7% in patients with COVID-19.
