Abstract

This study compared the efficacy of the extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lens, Vivity, with a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL). A prospective clinical intervention study with a control group was conducted on 92 eyes diagnosed with cataract and divided into two groups with Vivity and Lucia at the Department of Ophthalmology, Friendship Hospital, from March 2024 to December 2024. At the 3-month examination, the visual acuity of the Vivity group was LogMAR 0.06 ± 0.15, equivalent to the Lucia group (p = 0.35); the near and intermediate vision of the Vivity group was better than the Lucia group (p = 0.03; p < 0.01). Visual disturbance of the two groups was similar (p = 0.42); satisfaction and the spectacle independence of the Vivity group were better than the Lucia group (p < 0.01). According to ANSI standards, the Vivity IOL met ¾ of the criteria of a 1 EDOF IOL. The Vivity IOL provides distance vision and visual disturbances comparable to those of a monofocal IOL, while offering better intermediate and near vision. Patients with Vivity IOL insertion report high satisfaction reflected by high VF14 score and a high rate of spectacle independence. According to ANSI standards, the Vivity IOL meets ¾ of the criteria for an EDOF IOL.
